James Brown + Flood + The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart on their last day at Stratosphere Sound, with engineer James Brown (apparently the session took a lot out of him), producer Flood and assistant engineer Adam Tilzer:

James Brown & Flood in the studio with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart

Fresh off producing & mixing the “Say No to Love” single, our James Brown is teaming up with legendary producer Flood to record the new Pains of Being Pure at Heart album here in NYC.  Judging by the album demos James recorded with the band in May, it’s going to be a fantastic album.

Here is a totally unrelated photo I took of the first Pains 7″ I found while record shopping in Tokyo in March 2008:

Alternative Press gives “Say No To Love” a 4 out of 5

Alaternative Press sure does have some nice things to say about James Browns production and mix on the new Pains of Being Pure at Heart single!

“The title track of the two-song release is indeed tidier and punchier than the band’s fuzz-damaged, self-titled full-length. Despite the spring cleaning, though, the title track–as well as its B-side, “Lost Saint”–are just as simple and endearingly infectious as the scruffy old stuff. But where the band used to shamble, they now sparkle”

James Brown is recording Jane’s Addiction in Los Angeles

For the past week our own James Brown has been engineering two new Jane’s Addiction songs with Rich Costey producing.  Duff McKagan has replaced Eric Avery for this incarnation of Jane’s Addiction and if the photo below is any indication, he is pretty happy with the new job.

James Brown is mixing the upcoming Bear Hands album

I’ve only heard 4 songs, but I have to say it’s the best thing I’ve heard in a really, really, really long time.  No idea when it is going to be released or on what label, but when it is I think P4K may have to turn their rating scale up to 11.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart single gets cover art & release date

Our own James Brown produced, engineered and mixed the upcoming Pains single “Say No To Love”. A baseball fan might call that an unassisted triple play.  Both the A-side “Say No To Love” and B-side “Lost Saint” are just fantastic and we can’t wait for you all to hear them.

From Pitchfork: “Slumberland will release the Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s “Say No to Love”, backed by “Lost Saint”, on June 8. The 7″ record is pressed on sea foam green vinyl, and it’ll also be available digitally.”

Pitchfork also just posted the cover art, check it out.
