‘James Brown’ News

Foo Fighters score first ever US #1 album!! (And land at #1 in 11 other countries)

Yes, you read that correctly… I can’t believe that they haven’t had a #1 US album until now!  Wasting Light sold 235,000 copies in the US this week to top Adele’s 21, which came in a distant second with 95,000 sold.  Congratulations to all involved, especially our James Brown, who engineered and co-mixed it.  I’m sure this news is dulling the pain he is surely feeling from Mariano Rivera blowing a save last night…

Wasting Light is #1 in: USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Austria, Singapore and Belgium.

James Brown featured in in-depth article on the making of Foo Fighters “Wasting Light”

Wow – this story could have been called “Everything you ever wanted to know about recording a Foo Fighters album, but were afraid to ask”.  Emusician gets super in depth with Dave Grohl, Butch Vig and James Brown about making “Wasting Light” in Mr. Grohl’s Los Angeles garage, sans computers.  Check it out here, or click on the photo below.

James Brown on making records with Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and more

Fantastic in-depth interview currently on SonicScoop with our James Brown on making records with Butch Vig, Flood, Alan Moulder, Foo Fighters, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and more.  I’ve known James for years and it was a fascinating read even for me!  Head over here to SonicScoop to check it out.  Think we can work out a sponsorship for James as the official engineer of the New York Yankees?

James Brown earns a “Best New Music” from Pitchfork for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’s “Belong”!

If only every April fool’s day started like this…  Our James Brown did pre-production with the band last spring and engineered the album last summer.  He even co-produced the song “Too Tough” with Flood… and it’s nice to see a bit of validation from Pitchfork for all the hard work.  Congratulations to James, Flood, Alan and the band!  Click on the photo below for the full review.

Chris Coady & James Brown in the new issue of SPIN!

Interesting half-page story in the latest issue of SPIN discussing indie bands stepping up and recording with professional producers.  The story mentions Beach House working with our Chris Coady, but the focus of the story is The Pains of Being Pure at Heart working with Flood, Alan Moulder and (strangely unmentioned) James Brown.  They manage to misidentify James as Flood in the photo caption and misspell the name of the Pains bass player – it’s Alex “Naidus”, not “Naigus”.  Click on the photo below to enlarge and read the full story.

In other news, SPIN has an opening for a fact checker…

Foo Fighters & James Brown news roundup

As you probably know, our James Brown has spent a good chunk of the past two years working with Foo Fighters and poducer Butch Vig.  In 2009 James recorded two new songs for the Foo Fighters Greatest Hits LP, and last year he worked with the band and Butch again recording the upcoming full length LP.  Part of the recording process included having documentary film crew on hand 24/7 and the resulting documentary “Foo Fighters: Back and Forth” will debut this week at SXSW.  You can watch the trailer here, and head over to Pitchfork to see the video for the first single, “Rope” and tour dates.

Stream The Pains of Being Pure at Heart LP engineered by James Brown now!

Last year James Brown worked with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart.  A lot.  In January he produced and mixed the “Say No to Love” single.  In May he did album pre-production with the band in Brooklyn, and in July he engineered the album at Stratosphere Sound with Flood producing.  The “Belong” LP comes out later this month, but you can stream it now over at Pitchfork.

James Brown just recorded the new Arctic Monkeys album

Our James Brown spent 17 days in January at Sound City in Van Nuys, California recording the new Arctic Monkeys album with producer James Ford.  It was essentially recorded live to 24 track analog (excluding the odd fix and overdub) and mixed by Craig Silvey at Sunset Sound in Hollywood.  James says “it were a reet laff” (translation = it was a lot of fun). We can’t wait to hear the results.  Here is a nice shot of James and Alex Turner:

Foo Fighters documentary to debut at SXSW

Our James Brown shared the control room with a documentary film crew last year as he engineered the upcoming Foo Fighters album.  That footage will be included in a career-spanning documentary what will be shown for the first time (we think) in Austin at SXSW. Don’t miss it, as there is sure to be wonderful footage of James sitting in a chair looking at a tape machine remote.  Details from SPIN:
