Our Kyle “Slick” Johnson produced and mixed the debut album by Young Buffalo this summer. It’s set for an early 2011 release on Fat Possum Records (home of Wavves, The Walkmen, Band of Horses) and we are SUPER excited about it. I’ve been listening to the demos and album for months now and am glad that people who are just now hearing it for the first time are as excited as I am. I realize it’s only November 30th, but if Black Friday can now start the Monday before Thanksgiving, then I can do our year end list on the last day of November. This year has been pretty amazing and all of our guys have worked on outstanding records. Time to stand back and admire what our guys have accomplished.

Kyle “Slick” Johnson recorded and mixed the album with Dennis Herring and it’s no surprise that Pitchfork loves it. It’s a pretty great record, altho I’m pretty sure Debbi is sick of me playing “King of the Beach” over and over and over….

Pittsburgh’s 1,2,3 is one of the coolest new bands I’ve heard in a while. I’ve been listening to demos for months but I still don’t know what to call them/how to categorize them, other than “awesome”. I’m guessing they’ve listened to “Parklife” and watched Wattstax a few times. I could be totally wrong about that though. The band were in Philadelphia early this week recording 2 songs with Kyle “Slick” Johnson at Fancy Time.
On their blog, 1,2,3 describes one of the songs this way:
“In Philly as we speak, about to record our next single with Kyle “Slick” Johnson (fresh off the new Wavves album). It’s a Motown meets Misfits murder ballad from the point of view of a guy who drowns a little girl in the Allegheny river. Pretty excited.”

Kyle “Slick” Johnson is busy building his studio Philadelphia for the next few weeks. He has christened it “Fancy Time”. If you want to make a fancy record let him know.
